Director Darren Aronofsky describes the challenges of building the enormous ark in a new behind-the-scenes featurette for Noah. While this Biblical adventure has come under fire from religious groups, regarding how this iconic story is portrayed, the filmmaker reveals that, when it came to crafting the ark itself, they used the actual specifications that are laid out in the Bible. Production designer Mark Friedberg explains that the ark is 30 cubits high by 50 cubits wide by 300 cubits long, with a cubit equaling the distance between one's elbow to forefinger, and that the practical version they built was 165 feet long, which is extended digitally to roughly 500 feet. We also hear from Russell Crowe, who describes seeing the ark for the first time, and Emma Watson, along with footage from the set to see how huge this undertaking really is.
