Jordan Peele, Oscar winning creator of hit movies Get Out and Us, is keeping everyone guessing about the details of his upcoming, eery-looking movie.

Fans went crazy on Twitter when Peele announced the name and poster of his third, and no doubt breathtaking, movie, giving a resounding "Yep!" to his new film Nope. Speculations are being made about what this all means but from the nature of his previous movies, we'll be ready to hide behind those cushions, and fans better get ready as soon as it hits the screens in July 2022. As horror lovers count down the days, they want to know exactly what Nope is all about. Here is everything we know so far about Jordan Peele's new project.

Jordan Peele was initially entrenched in the comedy world, appearing in 94 episodes of MadTV and co-creating the beloved Comedy Central show Key & Peele before making his horror-movie debut in 2017. Get Out, the story of a young black man who finds himself in trouble after discovering some dark and unnerving secrets about his white girlfriend and her creepy family, earned praise for its brilliant and horrifying psychological storyline and racial commentary.

The film won Peele an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and had fans developing theories from the get-go; Peele was capturing attention and creating speculation just from the pre-release posters. The same thing happened with the initial posters for Us, well before the nightmare döppelganger movie was released in 2019. Peele seems to be doing the same thing with the intriguingly cryptic announcement and posters for Nope, and fans have been on the edge of their seats waiting for Peele to drop another shocker.

Some wonderfully familiar faces will be appearing in Peele's film later this year. Daniel Kaluuya, who starred in Get Out as Chris Washington and has since won an Oscar for Judas and the Black Messiah, will be once again be making an appearance in Nope as the lead role, and he's sure to be just as entertaining as always. This will be alongside Steven Yeun, who became largely recognizable after his role in The Walking Dead, which quickly became one of the most-watched television shows on cable. Now an Academy Awards nominee for his role in Minari, there was no denying that Yeun would soar in his career, and he's the perfect fit for a Peele film. Joining Kaluuya and Yeun will be Keke Palmer, who had her breakout role in 2012's Akeelah and the Bee but may be more familiar to audiences from the 2019 movie Hustlers, where she worked alongside Jenifer Lopez to rave reviews.

Peele is also welcoming some other well-known faces in Nope - joining the creepy world of horror is Barbie Ferreira, who Euphoria fans will know as Kat; Brandon Perea, known from The OA; and Michael Wincott, the raspy-voiced character actor who excels at villainous roles, as he did in The Crow. Not much is known on the parts they will be playing in Nope, so fans will have to stay alert for more announcements.

Storyline

Peele may be keeping the lead-up to the big moment suspenseful, but from the poster he shared, fans can now confirm that they’re counting down the days to July 22, 2022. Nope will arrive in cinemas only one weekend after the new Fantastic Beasts movie and there is nothing denying that movie fanatics are in for both a horrifying and magical summer.

We may have a date for the release of what we can expect to be a gripping and thought-provoking movie, but Peele has yet to provide any further details about the story of Nope. From what we know of Peele’s filmmaking style, fans can surely expect that Nope will be similar to Get Out and Us in their social commentary, racial allegories, and striking originality. With the release date only six months away, a trailer will surely soon be following with more details on the story.

At the moment, the secretive story of Nope can only be gleaned by the eery poster, which shows some kind of brightly-lit city beneath stormy skies. One particularly creepy cloud looms overhead, kite tail dangling from inside it as if it had engulfed a child; perhaps this is the kind of decorative string of flags one sees at a carnival or fair rather than a kite, so what may look like a city could also be fairgrounds. Naturally, this has opened doors and sparked all kinds of fan theories on the storyline of the film, leaving it up to the imagination of the audience.

Many seem to believe that it may be about aliens or some kind of climatic apocalypse, whilst others are just simply expressing their excitement for Peele's direction to be back on the big screen. It has taken a few years, with him working as a writer and producer on the excellent Twilight Zone reboot and the release of Candyman in 2021, which he co-wrote and produced (but is directed by filmmaker Nia DaCosta). This sequel and reboot of Candyman was a huge success as they use the film as an expression of anger towards racism and a symbol of inequality. So, it looks like Peele is on a winning streak and Nope will no doubt be another one to add.

Horror-loving fans, get your cushions ready because Nope is creeping up on you.
