The Obamas are heading to Netflix. We first got wind that former President Barack Obama and his wife and former First Lady Michelle Obama were in talks for a production deal with the streaming service in March. Now, it's official as Netflix and the duo have announced their new partnership. The multi-year deal will see the Obamas producing movies and TV shows for the service. Former President Obama had this to say about the new production deal.

"One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience. That's why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix, we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world."

During his Presidency, Barack Obama embraced the idea of new media and the role it plays in the world. He was the first sitting president to appear on a podcast, having done an episode of WTF with Marc Maron. Plus, he appeared as a guest recently on David Letterman's Netflix talk show. So the fact that he and Michelle have made this deal, while a very big deal, isn't the most surprising move. Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos had this to say.

"Barack and Michelle Obama are among the world's most respected and highly-recognized public figures and are uniquely positioned to discover and highlight stories of people who make a difference in their communities and strive to change the world for the better. We are incredibly proud they have chosen to make Netflix the home for their formidable storytelling abilities."

The specifics, in terms of programming, for this deal have not yet been disclosed, but it's being reported that the Obamas will not use the platform to speak out against President Donald Trump directly. Instead, they are going to use the deal to share stories that serve to inspire and educate. Here's what Michelle Obama had to say about it.

"Barack and I have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire us, to make us think differently about the world around us, and to help us open our minds and hearts to others. Netflix's unparalleled service is a natural fit for the kinds of stories we want to share, and we look forward to starting this exciting new partnership."

Netflix says the deal carries the potential for scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features, but no specific titles have been announced at this time. Netflix is spending $8 billion on content this year alone and this is one way to spend a big chunk of that cash. No dollar figure was disclosed, but rest assured, this one didn't come cheap.
