Bill Murray is re-teaming with director Sofia Coppola for On the Rocks. The movie will be the first as part of a deal between Apple and indie producer A24, which was struck last year in November. Apple is hoping to make a splash in the streaming game in the near future, in the hopes of keeping up with Netflix, and they partnered with A24 to help get some premium content in order to make that happen. Reuniting Murray with the director behind Lost in Translation is certainly one way to get attention.

According to a new report, Bill Murray has signed on to star in On the Rocks alongside former Parks and Recreation star Rashida Jones. The movie is said to center on a young mother who reconnects with her larger-than-life playboy father as they have themselves an adventure in New York. Production is expected to begin in the spring, with filming taking place on location in New York City. This is significant, as it marks the first time since 2015's Rock the Kasbah that Murray will be playing the lead in a movie. The last time he was seen on the big screen at all was his brief cameo in 2016's Ghostbusters reboot.

Sofia Coppola previously worked with A24 on their 2013 feature The Bling Ring. But most importantly, the last time she worked on a movie with Bill Murray, the result was 2003's Lost in Translation, which was met with widespread critical acclaim, on its way to a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. Coppola won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar that year, and she was also nominated for Best Director. Murray was nominated for Best Actor. Point being, when they team up, good things happen. More recently, Coppola directed his Netflix special, A Very Murray Christmas, in 2015.

As for Rashida Jones, she's been keeping very busy since her Parks and Recreation days. She has her TBS series Angie Tribeca (which Murray had a small guest appearance on at one point) and last year, she voiced Donna Who in The Grinch, in addition to appearing in the comedy Tag. Jones is also gearing up for an appearance at the Sundance Film Festival with her movie The Sound of Silence.

This is just one of many projects that Bill Murray has lined up as of late. He's also set to re-team with Wes Anderson for The French Dispatch, in addition to appearing as himself once again in Zombieland 2. Murray is also on board for director Jim Jarmusch's latest, The Dead Don't Die. It's not clear at the present time how Apple and A24 will distribute projects such as On the Rocks. Apple may choose to screen them exclusively on their eventual streaming platform, but it's possible that they still could wind up with a theatrical release, which would be handled through A24. We'll be sure to keep you posted as further details on the project come to light. This news was previously reported by Deadline.
