In mid-June, Tom Cruise was in /one-shot-lands-tom-cruise/talks to portray Lee Child's iconic Jack Reacher in an adaptation of the ninth novel in that series, One Shot. The actor has now been confirmed for the role.

Christopher McQuarrie, who was once set up to direct Top Gun 2 with Tom Cruise, a project that may still happen sometime in the future, will direct One Shot this fall for a 2012 release date.

The story follows a former military policeman turned drifter. It is not known why the ninth book was chosen to kick off this potential franchise, but here, Reacher is investigating a sniper who has been captured after five murders, and learns that there may be more to the case.

One Shot will be shot in Pittsburgh.
