Tom Cruise is in negotiations to star in One Shot, an adaptation of the Jack Reacher novel series by Lee Child.

The move may come as a surprise to some fans of the series, because Jack Reacher is described as being 6'5 and 250 pounds in the novel. The series, which spans over 15 novels, centers on the Jack Reacher character, a former military police officer who becomes a drifter. One Shot is the ninth novel in this series, and focuses on a sniper who is accused of murder, and seeks out Jack Reacher to help clear his name. Author Lee Child expressed his support of Tom Cruise portraying Jack Reacher in a brief statement.

"Reacher's size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way."

We first reported on this project back in July, when Christopher McQuarrie was hired by Paramount to adapt the novel. Christopher McQuarrie will also direct One Shot as well. Both Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise worked together on the 2008 World War II drama Valkyrie.

Tom Cruise's deal is not set in stone yet, although if he signs on quickly, they may start shooting One Shot before Tom Cruise begins work on Oblivion in January. Production is reportedly set to take place in Pittsburgh, even though the novel is set in the Midwest.
