The latest trailer for Oppenheimer further teases Christopher Nolan’s epic biographical outing about the struggles faced by theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, known as the "father of the atomic bomb.” Released courtesy of Universal Pictures, Oppenheimer is unlikely to be a typical bio with Nolan at the helm, with the filmmaker calling the real-life figure “the most important person who ever lived.” Check out the new trailer for Oppenheimer below.

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan and based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin, Oppenheimer will thrust audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it. The director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during the Manhattan Project, Oppenheimer’s contributions led to the creation of the atomic bomb, an invention that left him conflicted and even terrified of the power that he himself helped to unleash, uttering the immortal words, “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”

Led by Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the project has amassed one of the most star-studded casts in cinematic history and includes Emily Blunt as biologist and botanist Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, Oscar winner Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves Jr., director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey, Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

The stars in your eyes continue, with Oppenheimer also set to star Academy Award nominee Florence Pugh as psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie as theoretical physicist Edward Teller, Michael Angarano as Robert Serber, and Josh Hartnett as pioneering American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence, as well as Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Dane DeHaan, David Krumholtz, Alden Ehrenreich, Matthew Modine, Jack Quaid, David Dastmalchian, Jason Clarke, Josh Peck, Alex Wolff, Casey Affleck, Gary Oldman and more.

Academy Award nominated filmmaker Christopher Nolan recently communicated the importance of the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer. “Like it or not, J. Robert Oppenheimer is the most important person who ever lived,” he declared. “He made the world we live in — for better or for worse. And his story has to be seen to be believed, and I am certainly hopeful audiences will come to your theaters to see it on the biggest screens possible.”

Not only will Nolan use practical effects to recreate the first detonation of a nuclear weapon aka the Trinity test, but the filmmaker will also use Oppenheimer to put us in the room with the team as they witness the atom bomb become a reality. “In learning about that story, I wanted to be there in that room with them and see what that must have been like,” Nolan explained. “I wanted to take the audience there. To do so, I’ve assembled the most incredible cast and the finest technicians.”

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is scheduled to be released globally on July 21, 2023, by Universal Pictures.
