The Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise has been one of the most overwhelmingly popular and successful in the film industry since the first movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl premiered back in 2003. This was of course thanks in no small part to its lead stars Johnny Depp as the perpetually drunk and Jack Sparrow and Orlando Bloom as the young blacksmith-turned-pirate lord Will Turner. Along with Keira Knightley who played Elizabeth Swann, Will Turner's love who also eventually becomes a pirate lord herself, the trio turned the swashbuckling pirate adventure series into a global cinematic phenomenon. With the sixth film of the franchise now finally on the horizon, fans everywhere are wondering anxiously who may return for the latest installment. While no word has come from Depp's corner just yet, nor from Knightley, Orlando Bloom recently revealed in a new interview with Parade that he very much wants to return as Will Turner.
While doing the press circuit for the latest season of the fantasy drama series Carnival Row, when asked about any notable roles of his that he'd like to return to, Bloom wasn't shy whatsoever about wanting to pull up his bootstraps once more as Will Turner.
"Oh gosh, you know, I did get to go back and play Legolas in The Hobbit, which was 10 years later. I was like, 'This is a lot of fun!' Because he's such a great space to be in, and I think Will [Turner from Pirates of the Caribbean]—I mean Will's so great. I wouldn't mind seeing what Will looked like today in some ways, because he was such this earnest guy, but after rumbling around the bottom of the ocean for as long as he would have done at this point, it'd be interesting to see how he surfaces and what he's like."
Bloom last appeared in the series' fifth adventure Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) in a smaller role as Will Turner, who has since been bound to the Flying Dutchman as its captain, after the defeat of Davy Jones. Will and Elizabeth's son Henry embarks on a journey with the likes of Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa to find the Trident of Poseidon, which would free his father from the curse of the Dutchman. The film performed very well at the global box office, as expected, grossing nearly a billion dollars.
Will Turner's Son Also Down to Return to the Franchise
Actor Brenton Thwaites who played Will's son Henry Turner also expressed strong interest in possibly returning to the franchise to reprise his role. During an interview back in May 2022 Thwaites excitedly remarked that he'd absolutely return for either the sequel or a spinoff if the script and timing warranted it.
"Oh, that'll be interesting... that'll be interesting. Yeah, I think he could play! I think there's a way to fit him in there if it's the right time period, right?"
Director Joachim Rønning is set to return for the sixth film of the series, which currently has no working title or tentative release window. Jerry Bruckheimer, who has stayed relatively mum on any new developments, will remain as producer. Ted Elliot, who wrote the first four films of the franchise, will this time co-write alongside Craig Mazin, who currently has a full plate with other projects like HBO's new apocalyptic series The Last of Us.
