Lord of the Rings has tied the legendary Ben Hur in number of nominations.

Reactions: In an interview by phone with E! Entertainment Television, nominee Jon Voight said that he was "thrilled" by his nomination but that he was even happier that Will Smith has gotten recognition for his portrayal of Muhammed Ali.

Also, Sir Ian McKellen spoke to E! by phone from England. He told E! that he was very "gratified that the Academy has followed the good faith of the public" in nominating Lord of the Rings in so many categories.

Missing? There were several surprises as the nominations were announced. Among them, Billy Bob Thornton who had a banner year with Monsters Ball, The Man Who Wasn't There and Bandits, was passed over Director Baz Luhrmann was left out for the amazing Moulin Rouge . Renee Zellweger edged out Mulholland Drives' Naomi Watts, and David Lynch may have kept Christopher Nolan who directed the brilliant Memento out of the race for Best Director. The oddest missing in action nominee is Rick Baker in the Make-Up category for Planet of the Apes . Most in the industry would've thought Baker to be a lock for his amazing work on the film.
