It's time of year again and the nominations for the 95th Academy Awards are now in. Presented by Oscar winner and Sound of Metal star Riz Ahmed and alongside Get Out and M3GAN actress Alison Williams, this year’s event sees the likes of Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Banshees of Inisherin, and Elvis at the top of the pile, with the multiversal madness of Everything Everywhere All at Once garnering a whopping 11 nods including Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan, and Best Picture.
The dark tragi-comedy The Banshees of Inisherin meanwhile has picked up a total of 9 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for both Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan, and Best Actor for Colin Farrell. The popular actor’s first ever Oscar nomination.
Other notable nominations include Cate Blanchett for her lead performance as Lydia Tár in Tár, Austin Butler for his dedicated portrayal of the iconic Elvis Presley in director Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, Best Animated Feature for Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and, as was expected, a Best Actor nomination for Brendan Fraser for his powerful central performance in The Whale.
Fraser is currently in the middle of what has been dubbed the Brenaissance, with the actor having been showered with applause, standing ovations, and awards since taking the lead in The Whale. Beloved around the world, the actor certainly deserves, and many will be hoping to see Fraser take home the coveted Golden statue at the end of the night.
The 95th Academy Awards Brings a Few Surprises
There are a number of surprises this year, with the likes of Top Gun: Maverick being nominated for Best Picture. The love for sequels continues, with the multi-billion-dollar blockbuster Avatar: The Way of Water also finding itself among the Best Picture nominees. Standing alongside them are the likes of All Quiet on the Western Front, The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fabelmans, Tár, Triangle of Sadness, and Women Talking.
Everything Everywhere All at Once has also been nominated for not one, but two Best Supporting Actress performances, with both Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu up for the award. Finally, Black Panther star Angela Bassett has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Queen Ramonda in the MCU sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The first time that a Marvel outing has been given the nod for an acting performance.
The 95th Academy Awards 2023 is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 12, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, with Jimmy Kimmel all set to host. You can check out the full list of Oscar nominations 2023 below.
