While Netflix is not new to the scene of reality television, the streaming platform offers dozens of reality shows of all genres, and Outlast is their first foray into the Survivor territory. The premise is simple: Take 16 survivalists used to making their way in the wild, and force them to work as a team in the extreme Alaskan wilderness. What could go wrong? Judging from the trailer, plenty. This show offers a unique spin on the brave wilderness genre, as the contestants are all rugged survivors in the truest sense of the word.

Each one of the players has faced significant adversity, from combat situations to the harrowing journey of addiction to recovery. In other words, these men and women are tough! Not only will each of them have to face the dangers of the Alaskan wild, but they are forced to face down their own demons as well to compete. Each of the cast has what it takes to succeed, and mainly they have thrived as rugged individualists. Now, they are forced to work together with the people they must vanquish to win the game and the cash prize as a reward.

Outlast: The Rules

All the players, 16 in total, including 11 men and five women, are flown out over the Alaskan tundra, where they are made to parachute into the dense wilderness. The show was filmed in the fall, which means the large bear population has not yet gone into hibernation. Once on the ground, the players learn that they will not be working solo. Instead, they will be split up into four teams. Each team must set up in a different location, learn to work together to survive, and win the game and the million-dollar prize.

The players have varied backgrounds, but all of them are fluent in the art of survival. The real tension arises not from the clash of style or techniques but rather from a difference in attitude. How far will each team go to win? Not only will the players need a compass to guide them, but they will also have to use their moral compass to determine how they will play the game as it slowly devolves into a winner take all slugfest to survive. Even more challenging is that players cannot be voted off an island here. The only way to be removed from the competition is to voluntarily give up. Each contestant can change teams at any time, making allegiances fragile and leaving trust in short supply.

Of course, one of the real draws for the show will be the gorgeous and sometimes deadly Alaskan Wilderness. Alaska has been used before in reality shows about famous and not-so-famous Alaskan natives, and the wilderness has always played a backseat role, not with Outlast, as this series aims to make the Alaskan setting showcase its beauty and danger. We can expect a lot of fantastic cinematography to capture it all. This show's style and format should reinvigorate the wilderness survival genre. Outlast will surely provide the drama reality TV viewers crave as the contestants double cross and sabotage each other to win the million-dollar prize.
