2022 is a big year for the monarchy, as it is the year of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. To celebrate, Britain is putting on quite the spectacle. But one particular appearance brought a cozy and pleasant surprise to viewers on Saturday. That guest was none other than Paddington Bear, who can be seen in the clip below.

Paddington and Her Majesty are sitting in the palace and enjoying each other’s company. It is here where the polite bear offers the Queen his favorite snack. He pulls his red hat off and reveals the marmalade sandwich inside. “Perhaps you would like a marmalade sandwich? I always keep one for emergencies.”

Her Majesty doesn’t miss a beat in response. “So do I,” she then opens her bag revealing her own sandwich. “I keep mine in here.” She grins at the bear, who looks back at her in awe. Outside, a crowd of patriotic Britains cheer, catching the two’s attention inside. The two turn to each other, to which Paddington wishes the Queen a happy Jubilee, and thanks her for her service. “That’s very kind,” she responds. It is here when the festivities begin.

If you’re wondering the significance of the Jubilee, here is a basic rundown according to the Washington Post. The Platinum Jubilee is the 70th anniversary of Elizabeth’s rise to the throne. What makes this such a big deal is that she is the first British monarch to make such an achievement. Previously, the longest-serving monarch was Queen Victoria, who served for 63 years before her death at 81 in 1901. Previous royal figureheads would celebrate their jubilees with festivities such as feasts, jousting, and fireworks. Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977, her Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2002, and her Diamond Jubilee (60 years) in 2012.

While the Jubilee itself was on February 6th, the main celebrations were over the weekend. Starting on Thursday and ending on Sunday. Here is the official Jubilee schedule below from the Washington Post.

Thursday: The celebrations will kick off with Trooping the Colour, a military parade in honor of the queen’s official birthday. In the evening, more than 3,200 beacons will be ignited, reimagining and repurposing the torchlight relays once deployed in England to warn of possible invasion.

Friday: The queen and royal family will attend a church service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Queen Victoria marked her Diamond Jubilee here in 1897 with a similar service.

Saturday: The royal family will attend a horse race at Epsom Downs, south of London. The queen, though a keen rider and horse breeder, may miss the event to attend a birthday party for her great-granddaughter Lilibet, daughter of Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan. In the evening, a concert featuring Elton John, Diana Ross and Andrea Bocelli will take place at Buckingham Palace for an audience of 22,000 people.

Sunday: More than 10 million people are expected to take part in “Big Jubilee Lunches” across the nation. The community-organized street parties and barbecues aim to foster neighborliness, and similar events will take place in Canada, Brazil, New Zealand and South Africa. The weekend will end with a People’s Pageant, involving the military and members of the public and led by the queen’s Gold State Coach, alongside a host of celebrities, including singer Ed Sheeran and soccer star David Beckham.

While the Jubilee is definitely worthy of celebration, the furry little guest was definitely a surprise for viewers at home. In a way, an appearance from Paddington was a perfect choice to kick off the festivities. Compared to other children and family shows and characters, the bear is much more soft-spoken and dignified, and in no way panders to a specific audience. Plus, apparently Her Majesty shares a similar affection for marmalade.
