It's the end of the road for Paper Girls at Prime Video, but that doesn't necessarily mean the series is finished just yet. Deadline reports that Amazon Studios has canceled the series after a single season on the streaming platform following the first season's premiere in July. The glimmer of hope that remains for fans of the show is that Legendary TV will reportedly shop the series, hoping to find a new home elsewhere.

Certainly, Amazon did not axe the series due to a negative reception with critics. The show landed with a 90% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, almost matched by its audience score of 88%. What was working against the series was its low viewership, as it did not really make a dent in Nielsen's weekly streaming rankings. As noted in the Deadline report, most of Amazon's marketing in recent months has been geared more toward its new series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power which may have overshadowed Paper Girls.

Paper Girls is based on a sci-fi comic book series of the same name by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang with the TV show developed by Stephany Folsom. The series stars Camryn Jones, Riley Lai Nelet, Sofia Rosinsky, Fina Strazza, Adina Porter, Ali Wong, Nate Corddry, and Sekai Abeni. It is executive produced by Vaughan, Chiang, Folsom, Christopher C. Rogers, Christopher Cantwell, Steven Prinz, and Plan B.

“As huge fans of what Brian and Cliff created in Paper Girls, we couldn’t be more excited by the opportunity to bring this incredible adventure to life,” Folsom, Cantwell, and Rogers said in a joint statement when the show was announced in 2020. “This is a story with so much heart, and so many unique colors and dimensions – our sincere hope is not only to do justice to the source material, but to make Paper Girls unlike anything else currently on TV.”

Perhaps the show will end up getting another chance for a second season at another streaming service or network that's impressed with its reviews and hopeful that another season will bring success.
