City on the Hill and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds might be streaming on the same service soon. Today, it was announced that Paramount Global is considering merging two streaming service providers, Showtime and Paramount+.

According to a Wall Street Journal exclusive with people familiar with the situation at Paramount Global, the company is considering ending its Showtime streaming service and shifting the Showtime content into Paramount+ to streamline its offering amid a growing crowd of competitors in the steaming marketplace. Showtime’s $10.99-per-month service features programming from the premium channel, including fan-favorite and critic darling shows like Yellowjackets, The Chi, and The Man Who Fell to Earth. In today's streaming marketplace, it is becoming harder for smaller services like Showtime to compete in a sector with a wide range of offerings from Amazon and Netflix to Disney+ and NBC Universal's Peacock.

Per the WSJ report, the discussions inside the company to fold that service into Paramount+ are still early. For Paramount, combining the two streaming services would likely require the company to engage in complex negotiations with cable and satellite TV providers who currently carry the Showtime TV channel. Some people who spoke to WSJ also said that Paramount had broached the idea of closing the stand-alone Showtime service in conversations with at least one major pay-TV partner.

"We are always exploring options to maximize the value of our content investment by giving consumers access to great Paramount content through an array of services and platforms," a Paramount Global spokesman said.

Paramount Global is Already Offering a Showtime and Paramount+ Bundle

In some markets, Paramount Global seems to have already started bringing the two streaming services closer together. Although Showtime and Paramount+ still maintain their own separate apps in these markets, Paramount offers customers the option of purchasing both streaming services in a packaged bundle at discounted prices of $7.99 per month with ads and $12.99 per month without ads, an offer that lasts through October 2, at which point the price increases.

The move would come at a time in the industry when Paramount Global isn't the only company looking to improve its streaming package to lure in more customers. Some companies have chosen to offer streaming bundles where customers can pay a discounted rate for subscribing to all of a studio's streaming services—for example, it's been reported that among all the upheaval at WB, Warner Bros. Discovery is going to combine Discovery+ with its flagship service, HBO Max. Whereas, last month Paramount+ tried a different tactic: it would offer Paramount+ free to subscribers of its Walmart+ program.
