Paramount+ is throwing its hat into the ring of fun senior-year-themed films and trying to bolster its young adult catalog. Earlier this year, Netflix released Senior Year, a film starring Rebel Wilson about a girl who falls into a coma during her senior year of high school. When she wakes up, she wants to finish what she never got to. Paramount's addition to the senior-year film lineup is Honor Society. The film will follow Honor (Angourie Rice) as she tries to take down her opponent Michael (Gaten Matarazzo) for a recommendation letter to Harvard.

Deadline confirmed the film was coming in January 2022, meaning it was a quick turnaround time from its green light to release. But, not having to add in Demogorgons probably shaves some post-production time off. David A. Goodman wrote the film while Oran Zegman directed it. This is Zegman's first directorial piece that is not a short film. Goodman has been an executive producer and writer on The Orville, Family Guy, and American Dad!. Honor Society's executive producers include Don Dunn (Light as a Feather, iCarly), Ron French (Fear the Walking Dead), and Syrinthia Studer.

Let's put on some lipstick and make a scheme. Here's everything you need to know about Honor Society before it hits the streaming platform.

Honor Rose has spent the last four years of high school doing everything perfectly. She's received perfect grades, formed new clubs, and helped her community, all so she can earn a recommendation letter and go to her Ivy League of choice, Harvard. When she approaches the guidance counselor Mr. Calvin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) about the letter, he lets her know it's between her and three other students for the coveted recommendation. Honor is less than enthused when she hears this.

She already knows which three students he is speaking of, but only considers one a true threat: Michael. To ensure she looks the best candidate as Mr. Calvin decides who to write the letter for, she develops a plan to distract Michael just enough so he fails his midterms. She's hoping to then use her superior grades to edge Michael out of the running. Her efforts start small, asking him to study while seductively putting on lipstick, and end up pretty obvious as she's seemingly caught following him home from school.

However, like any other coming-of-age film, her plan backfires when she begins to have a crush on Michael. He seems interested from the initial interaction, but it takes some time for her to realize what she's fallen into. Based on her conversation with her friends, she doesn't really seem to know how to handle the realization. Will her feelings change her plan? Who will receive Mr. Calvin's recommendation? Hopefully, we will find out before the movie comes to a close.

Angourie Rice is Honor, the high school senior trying to ensure the last four years weren't for nothing. Audiences may recognize Rice from her role as Betty in Tom Holland's Spider-Man trilogy. She's also in an episode of Black Mirror and was in the HBO limited series Mare of Easttown. Stranger Things actor Gaten Matarazzo plays Honor's nemesis-turned-crush Michael. Those that don't watch the Netflix series may know his voice from The Angry Birds Movie 2 or have seen his show Prank Encounters. Christopher Mintz-Plasse (How to Train Your Dragon, Promising Young Woman) is Mr. Calvin, the counselor Honor is trying to receive a recommendation letter from.

Everything Else We Know

This isn't the only movie this year that features Angourie Rice as a high school senior. The actress plays the high school version of Rebel Wilson's Stephanie in Senior Year. The two characters are drastically different, though. While Honor is academically motivated, Stephanie was socially motivated. She reinvents herself to become the captain of her high school's cheer squad and the most popular girl in school before her tragic tumble.

For Honor, "high school is about getting out of high school," while Stephanie just wants to experience everything she missed while she was in a coma. Both are determined to have the future they dreamed of. Stephanie wants her fancy mansion, and Honor intends to go to Harvard, and it's going to happen for them, no matter what.
