The Field: According to Variety, in a seven-figure deal, Paramount has made a preemptive purchase of The Field, a pitch for a potential tentpole film to be scripted by Dean Georgaris. Georgaris will produce with partner Michael Aguilar under their Penn Station banner.
Georgaris will begin writing the action-heavy sci-fi event film as soon as he completes Sam and George, a script he hatched for Paramount as a reteam of Lethal Weapon's Mel Gibson and director Richard Donner.
Gibson is expected to play a man wrongly incarcerated for 25 years who nonetheless emerges blissfully happy that he's free. He is befriended by a lawyer who sees a huge lawsuit windfall if only he can get Gibson's character to face the fact that his life was destroyed. Lauren Shuler Donner is producing with Gibson and his Icon partner Bruce Davey.
Georgaris has fast become a go-to guy for Par. After scripting Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, he wrote Paycheck and followed with The Manchurian Candidate remake, sharing screen credit with Daniel Pyne. Georgaris' only other script, Tristan & Isolde, was made by director Kevin Reynolds, with James Franco and Sophie Myles starring.
