An eighth installment in the long-running horror franchise Paranormal Activity is reportedly eyeing a 2023 release. During a recent interview with producer Jason Blum, Variety revealed that Paranormal Activity 8 is looking to frighten audiences sometime next year, though there is no word as yet whether these jump scares will occur on the big or small screen.

News of an eighth outing began on the day that number seven, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, was released. The sequel will reportedly be titled Paranormal Activity: The Other Side, and is rumored to take us back to Katie and Kristi's childhood home. When four young friends move into Katie and Kristi's house together before college starts, they soon discover the gruesome past of the building and it's connection to evil.

Released back in 2007, the first Paranormal Activity centers on young couple Katie and Micah, who have recently moved to a new house in San Diego, California. They are soon terrorized by a demon that has stalked Katie since childhood, with the movie making use of found footage of the characters in their house. As was the style at the time. Full of jump scares, genuine, intense terror and a shocking ending, Paranormal Activity was met with critical acclaim, with many praising the movie for doing so much with so little.

Thanks to making $193 million worldwide against its ludicrously low production budget of $15,000 ($215,000 post-production), Paranormal Activity became the most profitable movie of all time – which of course led to sequels. Seven of them. Each of gradually lesser quality.

The latest outing, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, debuted on Paramount+ in October last year, and follows a group who attempt to make a documentary on an Amish community, only for them to discover the horrific secrets the town holds. Directed by William Eubank, written by Christopher Landon, and produced by Jason Blum and Oren Peli, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin was met with negative reviews from critics, who slammed the installment for its lack of scares. Audiences were even less kind.

Jason Blum Thinks the Paranormal Activity Franchise Should Come to an End

Despite the huge financial success of the Paranormal Activity franchise, CEO of Blumhouse Productions and producer Jason Blum believes that it is now time for the found footage series to come to an end. “It has been enough already. That last ‘Paranormal Activity’ movie was terrible,” Blum said of the most recent installment, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, which premiered last year. Blum went to compare the franchise to that of Halloween, another long-running horror classic that has been successfully brought back to life and will come to its conclusion with Halloween Ends later this year.

“With ‘Halloween,’ we only had the rights to three movies, so we said: ‘Halloween Ends’! It ends for Blumhouse, at least,” he said. “With other things, you just have this feeling it’s time to put them to bed. It would come back if some director I love, like Scott Derrickson, said: ‘I have a great idea for a ‘Paranormal Activity’ movie. But it’s not something I want to do [at the moment].”

So, look out for Paranormal Activity 8 sometime in 2023. Halloween Ends, meanwhile, is scheduled to be released on October 14, 2022, by Universal Pictures.
