Disney+ is again in the crosshairs of the Parent Television and Media Council (PTC), this time for adding Marvel’s R-rated titles like Logan and the Deadpool series. The PTC had criticized Disney+ earlier this year as well for streaming Daredevil and other Defenders universe shows of Netflix, which are all rated TV-MA.

For those unaware, the PTC is a conservative media advocacy group that works toward protecting children and families from violent, lewd, and profanity-laden content across media platforms. Although, its detractors argue that it promotes censorship. In the past, the PTC has called for a ban on HBO’s Euphoria and recently slammed Netflix for introducing explicit adult content in Stranger Things season 4, demanding the show be rated TV-MA.

The addition of Deadpool and Logan to the Disney+ catalog as the first R-rated movies has been well-received by fans and Marvel stars, with both Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman taking to social media to celebrate the decision. But the PTC argues that this decision breaks the Walt Disney Company’s 2019 promise of never adding mature movies to Disney+. Here’s what PTC President Tim Winter said:

"Three years ago, the Walt Disney Company made a promise to families: No R-rated movies on Disney+, they said. It’s a family-focused platform, they said. We have Hulu for our edgier adult fare, they said. It turns out they were lying to us. After decades of corporate brilliance establishing itself as the world’s most trusted brand for families, today’s C-level suite at Disney has decided to flush it all down the toilet."

Winter also asserted that the presence of mature content on Disney+ violates the trust of families, on whose backs the Walt Disney Company built its massive empire, and eventually, this decision will lead to the company’s downfall.

"While Disney+ points subscribers to its parental controls, the mere presence of R-rated and TV-MA rated content violates the trust and sensibilities of families. What took decades to build is now taking mere months to erase.

One day in the not-too-distant future, business schools will point back to this abrupt corporate U-turn as they analyze what happened to the once-great Walt Disney Company. And in the meantime, families will continue to be woefully underserved by Hollywood."

Expect More Mature Content To Arrive On Disney+ In The Future

Disney+ is the third biggest streaming service in the world, and unlike Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, it was home to exclusively PG-13 titles till recently, but now the streamer is incorporating mature content as well. With the acquisition of Fox and multiple studios holding rights to Marvel properties, Disney seems in favor of keeping all their most prized franchises like Star Wars and Marvel on a single platform. And we can expect more adult-oriented movies and TV shows to arrive on the platform in the future.

Marvel has already greenlit Deadpool 3, keeping the R-rating intact and granting full freedom to the writers. Then there’s Blade and Werewolf by Night in development as well, both of which could be rated for adults. And in one of its most surprising decisions yet, the studio announced at the SDCC that Marvel Zombies will be the first original TV-MA-rated Disney+ series when it premieres in 2024.
