For those of you currently unaware, Tim Allen will not be voicing Buzz Lightyear in the upcoming Pixar film Lightyear. That honor will instead go to Chris Evans. Actress Patricia Heaton of Everybody Loves Raymond and The Middle fame has seemingly just learned about the switch and took to social media to share her feelings on the subject.

On Tuesday, she tweeted, “Saw the trailer for Buzz Lightyear and all I can say is Disney/Pixar made a HUGE mistake in not casting my pal Tim Allen in the role that he originated, the role that he owns. Tim IS Buzz! Why would they completely castrate this iconic, beloved character?”

Technically speaking, the Buzz Lightyear that appears in Lightyear is a different character than the one featured in Toy Story and its three sequels. Allen’s Buzz is a toy that belongs to a child named Andy. He is based on the action hero of a fictional movie that Andy saw that made him want the toy in the first place.

“Tim’s version of Buzz is a little goofier and is a little dumber, and so he is the comic relief. In this film, Buzz is the action hero. He’s serious and ambitious and funny, but not in a goofy way that would undercut the drama. Chris Evans has the gravitas, and that movie-star quality that our character needed to separate him and the movie from Tim’s version of the toy in Toy Story,” director Angus MacLane explained to Vanity Fair regarding the differences between the two Buzzs.

People Had A Lot to Say in Response to Patricia Heaton's Comments

Heaton’s comments have been criticized by some, who have taken to Twitter themselves in response. One detractor wrote, “Seeing Buzz’s genitals was arousing, but knowing they weren’t the penis and balls of the Tool Man himself really steamed me! It was incredibly hard to climax.” Others have tried to be more diplomatic by explaining that there are two different Buzzs.

Upon having this distinction pointed out to her by fans, Heaton responded that she got that the film was supposed to be an origin story but added that the reason the character became so beloved in the first place was because of what Allen created. “Why remove the one element that makes us want to see it?” Heaton wrote before adding the hashtag “#stupidhollywooddecisions.”

Others have agreed with Heaton, with one person writing, “Disney makes ALL decisions with political implications in mind. Tim Allen is conservative so no longer suitable for hire in a Disney production. Stop with the ‘this is not the toy’ or other spin. You know and I know why Allen didn’t voice Buzz.”

It should probably be noted that Allen will be returning to a Disney property later this year. The Clauses is a Disney+ series that is a continuation of The Santa Clause series. Allen will reprise his role of Scott Calvin aka Santa Clause aka Kris Kringle aka Pére Noël aka Babbo Natale aka Pelz-Nickel aka Topo Gigio.

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for Allen and Disney, the company that owns Pixar, for a comment regarding Heaton’s remarks, but they have not received a response. Lightyear is scheduled to hit theaters this Friday. Other voice actors in the cast include Taika Waititi, Uzo Aduba, Keke Palmer, James Brolin, and Peter Sohn.
