While speaking to the press about the Roland Emmerich movie Moonfall, Patrick Wilson has revealed that he will soon be getting to work on Insidious 5, the fourth sequel in the horror franchise that will also be the star’s directorial debut, confirming that he on track to start shooting later this year. The original Insidious was a huge hit for the team of James Wan and Leigh Whannell, who had previously brought the low-budget Saw to screens in 2004. Insidious made its debut in 2010 and was the first collaboration between Wan and Leigh and the horror-loving Blumhouse.

As with the Paranormal Activity franchise, Insidious dealt with a family tormented by evil, but rather than poltergeists, the evil presence was in the form of a demon from a dimension called The Further. After the first film was a monster hit, a second movie followed in 2013, with Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne reprising their original roles and Ty Simpsons and Andrew Astor as their two children. The story was then expanded further with a third movie, which focussed on Lin Shaye’s character of the medium Elise, and then seemed to have found a conclusion with Insidious: The Last Key in 2018, which brought Elise’s story up to the events of the original movie.

Of course, it is hard to keep a profitable horror franchise down, and Blumhouse announced a fifth movie was on the way in October 2020. While that announcement was made in the middle of the Covid pandemic, and therefore the film has had its production delayed significantly, it seems that everything is now in place. Wilson told Screen Rant:

“It's something that I'm super passionate about, and there hasn't been a day since they pitched me the idea that I haven't been all in. It's been a lot of work by Scott Teems, the writer, and me. And Leigh Whannell has helped out obviously a ton, and of course Blumhouse is a great partner. I've done a bunch of stuff with them, so I couldn't be happier to have my first experience with a very helpful and comfortable group of people that, for some reason, trust me. So, we'll see.”

Insidious 5 Will Act As A Sequel To Insidious 2, Continuing the Original Story

The last time Wilson appeared as one of the lead characters in the franchise was back in Insidious: Chapter 2, and as the last movie brought Elise’s prequel movies back up to date with the original movie’s timeline, it stands to reason that Insidious 5 will pick up sometime after the first two movies in the series. While it is not currently known who else will be returning other than Wilson as Josh Lambert and Ty Simpkins as his son, it seems probable that at least some other stars will be back for the latest sequel.

Of course, there is every chance that the film will act as a bit of a break away from the other movies and could see Wilson and Simpkins moving on and being the only returnees in the film. What fans will be hoping is that Lin Shaye at least will be back as Elise, as having given the character her own two-movie backstory, it seems a bit of a waste to not have the one character connecting all the movies together back again.
