Finding out exactly what point of its development Wonder Woman 3 is right now has been almost impossible in the last year. While both star Gal Gadot and writer/director Patty Jenkins have said at irregular intervals that things are moving along, neither have gone so far as to give any specific details on the highly anticipated threequel. That is until now, where Patty Jenkins has seemed to suggest that the script for the movie is done.

Gal Gadot made her debut as Wonder Woman back in 2017, with a sequel being released in 2020 on HBO Max and a limited theatrical run due to the Covid pandemic. While Wonder Woman 1984 received very mixed reviews and did not make anywhere near as much as expected due to the circumstances in which it was released, it did become the best-selling home release of 2021. Wonder Woman 3 was never really in doubt, even with the recent upheaval in the world of the DCEU, and now Jenkins had given the most promising update yet. While speaking at Matera Film Festival, Jenkins said:

"And so, where I said that I was only going to do one, then oh my god, I have to do two. And then, I find myself saying, ‘Oh my god, I’m antsy to do three.’ And so, even now, I say, ‘That’s it’ because I always plan a three-movie arc. There is a story that goes through these three different movies as a whole. But even now, I just wrote last week the final scene of Wonder Woman 3 and I thought, I might be interested to see what happens next. So you’ll never know. They have asked us to think of ways to do more and it accidentally happens. But you’ll never know. I have a lot of other films that I’m excited to do as well. And I love Gal Gadot so that makes it better too."

Original Wonder Woman Star Lynda Carter Will Appear In Wonder Woman 3

Watch Lynda Carter Strike Wonder Woman Pose During Walk of Fame Ceremony

Although Gal Gadot is now Wonder Woman for this generation, older fans were happy to see the original Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter, making a cameo appearance at the end of Wonder Woman 1984. It has been confirmed by Patty Jenkins that Carter will be back in a larger role in Wonder Woman 3. After appearing with Gadot, Carter explained how it was strange seeing someone else taking over the role when she watched the actress’ first appearance in her 2017 debut. She said:

“Oh, I was thrilled, I was standing, I was applauding, I was crying, I was laughing. I was holding the hand of my daughter and husband. It was strange to see another woman taking that mantle.”

Exactly what Carter’s capacity in the third movie of the franchise will be is something that will not be revealed for a while yet. There is currently no release date slated for Wonder Woman 3, but with Jenkins’ script seemingly complete, it may not be long before we find out when we can expect the movie’s arrival in cinemas.
