Ghostbusters fans will soon be getting an all-new box set containing most of the films in the series, and Paul Feig wants to know why is installment is not among them. Set to arrive in early 2022, Sony is releasing the eight-disc Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection box set on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD alongside the single home release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The Ultimate Collection includes 1984's Ghostbusters, 1989's Ghostbusters II, and 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

You might have noticed that what isn't included here is Feig's 2016 reboot, retroactively dubbed Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. Feig has also noticed, and the filmmaker has taken to Twitter to let the studio know about his displeasure. Standing by the reboot and its accomplishments, Feig puts Sony on blast for brushing the reboot under the rug, suggesting it's just as much a Ghostbusters film as the rest.

"Um … Sony Pictures, I know this must be a mistake," Feig said, using the hashtag #weareallghostbusters. "We do have a lot of fans and Bill, Dan and Ernie were in it and it won the Kids Choice Award for Best Feature Film the year it came out. So, I guess this was just an oversight?"

As of now, Sony hasn't offered an official comment on why Ghostbusters: Answer the Call isn't a part of this particular box set. Fans of the film along with many Ghostbusters collectors have also criticized the decision to release an "ultimate" box set that doesn't include the complete collection, regardless of how some fans might feel about the reboot. With that said, there is a big portion of Ghostbusters fans who prefer to act like the 2016 movie never existed, so maybe Sony is trying to appeal to this section of the fan base.

Ernie Hudson, who had a cameo in the reboot as an original character, recently touched on Ghostbusters: Answer the Call coming up short with fans. He praised the talent involved and felt that it was a fun film, but Hudson also believes setting the story in a different universe created a rift with longtime fans who'd been waiting years for a sequel.

“I’m a big fan of Paul and the four women, they’re all very funny people — but I felt they put themselves in a bind because they didn’t make it part of the Ghostbusters universe," Hudson told Yahoo. "I think Paul wanted to do his thing and the fans saw Ghostbusters in a very specific way. I think Jason took that into account in the new movie. It would’ve been easier if they hadn’t done a reboot."

Maybe he was right. Ghostbusters: Afterlife primarily follows all-new characters, but it's very clear that we are in the same universe as the original films. The screen time of the returning Ghostbusters was very limited, but just sharing that universe went a long way with the fans of the franchise. It also opened the door for that touching appearance from Harold Ramis as Egon Spengler, giving us one last peek at the beloved actor in the role.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection are hitting Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on Feb. 1, 2022.
