Variety reports that writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood) is presently working on an untitled period drama that will star Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Hoffman is going to play the founder of a new religious organization in the 1950s. The project is presently set up at Universal. Pending a finished script from Anderson, the studio is waiting to make the film with a budget of $35 million.
Hoffman's character is a "charismatic intellectual who hatches a faith-based organization that begins to catch on in America in 1952." The film will focus on the Master and Freddie, he is a twenty year old drifter who becomes the leader's right hand man. As the faith gains a foothold with people, Freddie finds himself questioning his mentor.
