Director Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Starship Troopers), who hasn't directed a film since 2006's Black Book, will direct the new film The Hidden Force, according to Variety.

Gerard Soeteman will be writing the screenplay, which will be adapted from the Louis Couperus' book, which will be set in the year 1900, the year the novel was written, on the island of Java. Here's the description of the book:

"A novel written in 1900 and set in the Dutch East Indies. It concerns a colonial official who is undone by his wilful application of reason to a culture that is steeped in the mystical and irrational."

It wasn't specified in the trade article, but since Paul Verhoeven's last film, Black Book, was a Dutch-language film, The Hidden Force could also be a Dutch-language film as well.

The site reports that the film is expected to be released in the winter of 2011.
