Edward Zwick (Defiance, Blood Diamond) has signed on to direct Pawn Sacrifice, with Tobey Maguire attached to star and produce.

The project is based on the true story of American chess prodigy Bobby Fischer's famous world championship match against Russia's Boris Spassky in 1972. Tobey Maguire will portray Bobby Fischer, with producers currently seeking an actor to play his Russian counterpart. We first reported on this project back in March 2010, when David Fincher was set to direct.

Steven Knight (Eastern Promises) wrote the screenplay, with Tobey Maguire and Gail Katz producing. No production schedule was released.

Edward Zwick is also attached to direct The Great Wall for Legendary Pictures, and he is writing the screenplay adaptation for American Assassin at CBS Films. It isn't known which of these projects will move forward first.
