We are just over a month away from seeing James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad spinoff Peacemaker arrive on HBO Max and as you would expect it is time for the Warner Bros. marketing machine to kick into action and really get the series out under the noses of anyone and everyone who may be interested in the anti-hero’s solo adventure. For this reason, we have been treated to a new clip from the show, which revealed that John Cena’s Christopher Smith doesn’t have a lot of appreciation for the King of Atlantis, Aquaman.

In the latest clip from the series, which can be seen below, Peacemaker has a discussion with a hospital janitor and is seen professing himself to be a superhero. Then, the cleaner says that he doesn’t believe him because Smith is not famous like Aquaman. As Smith, John Cena has a very short NSFW response to the comment, and clearly doesn’t have much time for the Justice League hero played in the DCEU by Jason Momoa.

For a long time there was quite a bit of discussion by fans as to where Peacemaker would sit in relation to The Suicide Squad. While it was confirmed by director James Gunn that the series is primarily set after the Task Force X mission to Corto Maltese, it will also have some jumps back to the past in order to deal with the origins of the character. In the events of The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker turned out to be a planted operative of Amanda Waller, and his path took him into a conflict with his fellow team members, culminating with Idris Elba’s Bloodsport shooting him. While it seemed that this was the end of Peacemaker, the post-credit scene revealed that he actually survived the shooting, setting him up for a reunion with Advanced Research Group Uniting Super-Humans personnel.

While the main story of Peacemaker is still to be revealed, we have had plenty of clips and previews so far and this latest one just goes to further expand little bits of detail about Cena’s character and how he fits into the grander DC world. Clearly Smith believes that since the events of The Suicide Squad he now has the right to be called a superhero despite his dubious past, and in addition shows that despite him not appearing in any real capacity in any movies other than Justice League and Aquaman – discounting his small cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – Aquaman clearly is well-known to the general public in Peacemaker’s world. Whether this is a sign of many different threads starting to pull together in the DCEU’s big picture, we will just have to wait to find out in the future.

For now, it is unlikely that Aquaman and Peacemaker will be swimming in the same circles with Arthur Curry will be seen next having issues under the sea in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom next December, while we can expect to see Peacemaker doing his thing in January on HBO Max.
