It is casting news that is unsurprising, but will still no doubt manage to be disappointing to some fans. Alexandra Daddario has stated in a recent interview that she has no involvement in the upcoming Percy Jackson series currently in development for Disney+.

The movies that Daddario starred in and the upcoming Disney+ series are both based upon a series of novels written by Rick Riordan called Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Daddario starred as Annabeth Chase in movies based upon the first two books of that series, The Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters. Annabeth is one of the main characters of the books, aiding Percy in his adventures (albeit reluctantly) so it is an important role.

While on a recent episode of the WrapWomen’s Unwrapped podcast, Daddario was asked about any involvement she might have with the Disney+ series. Her response was to laugh and say “No!” before expounding upon how much she loved working on the movies.

Daddario stated, "No! No, I loved Percy Jackson. Like, I loved it. When I stepped into Percy Jackson and got that job, I had no idea what it was. I was like, a bit part actor in New York City, you know? I was a kid, I was working at a bar, I didn't have any idea of Hollywood or of all this stuff."

"I am so excited for the kids that are going to be cast in that and how they'll inspire a new generation of young women," she added. "Like it's so cool, Annabeth is a really inspiring character to people. But no, I don't know anything about it beyond that, and I shouldn't! I was just the girl in the movie."

Although it has long been expected that none of the stars of the two Percy Jackson and the Olympians movies would have any involvement in the new series, it will still come as a disappointment to some fans. For some fans, the movies were problematic in many ways. They did not follow the original source material very well. Still, despite portraying Annabeth as older than she is in the books, Daddario’s portrayal of the character was considered to be a bright spot of the two films.

As far as the Disney+ series, the producers are hoping to not make the same mistakes the movies made with regards to the source material. The series’ author, Riordan, is working alongside the producers and, rumor has it, he is penning most of the scripts for the series himself. This should give fans of the books a more pleasing experience overall. While there will still certainly be differences from the books, with Riordan’s involvement, the series will almost certainly be more true to the source material. As of yet, no casting has been announced.

As for Daddario, she has made the most of the opportunity that the Percy Jackson and the Olympians movies have given her. Following the Percy Jackson and the Olympians movies, Daddario starred in the first season of HBO’s True Detective before starring alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in both San Andreas and Baywatch. She has kept busy and is an in demand actress, something that may not have happened without being cast as Annabeth.

The new Percy Jackson series is currently in production at Disney+ (without Daddario’s involvement) and is expected to be released sometime in late 2022 or early 2023.
