Percy Jackson creator Rick Riordan has hinted that a second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians could be on the way to Disney+. While the first season of the Percy Jackson book series adaptation has yet to hit the streaming service, the fanfare surrounding the project might have encouraged Disney executives to begin production on season 2 of the Greek mythology-inspired series.

The show's first season promises to follow Percy as he and his demigod companions, Annabeth and Grover, journey from Camp Half-Blood across the United States to retrieve Zeus' stolen lightning bolt. The series plans to re-introduce the iconic journey first introduced in Riordan's 2005 young adult novel Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

Riordan's involvement in the filming and planning for the series has encouraged fans that the show will be a more faithful adaptation of the book series than the short-lived Percy Jackson film series. While the series' first season hasn't even wrapped production yet, excitement and rumors surrounding a potential second season have already started circulating. On Riordan's personal blog, the author hinted that the show's cast and crew are actively planning for an eventual season 2. Here is what Riordan had to say:

"If you haven’t seen a particular god or demigod announced, that’s because they don’t appear in the season and won’t be cast until we start the subsequent seasons, which means any of those announcements are probably at least a year away. More later, demigods, but I am pleased to tell you we are in a very good place as we look ahead to a (not-yet-greenlit-but-fully-anticipated) season two!"

What Can Fans Expect From Percy Jackson and the Olympians

The new cast for Disney+'s Percy Jackson series
Disney Platform Distribution

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is poised to rewrite the history of the Percy Jackson franchise following the underperforming film series starring Logan Lerman. The series is particularly well set up for success due to Riordan's close and continued involvement, whose presence will likely lead to a more faithful adaptation.

One of the most notable differences between the film series and the Disney+ streaming series is the age of the actors. The new cast features young actors Walker Scobell, Leah Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri as the series' core trio, while established actors such as Lance Reddick (John Wick), Timothy Omundson (Psych), Toby Stephens (Die Another Day), and Jay Duplass (Cyrus) have also joined the cast. Even Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton and In The Heights fame has joined the cast as the Greek god Hermes.

With younger actors at the helm, Percy Jackson and the Olympians will allow the actors to grow with the roles and the series, assuming the series continues to get renewed as Riordan teases.
