The home video release of this year's Pet Sematary movie will include an alternate ending that's somehow even darker than the one shown in theaters. Directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer, the movie was written by Jeff Buhler. It's the second movie adaptation of the novel of the same name by Stephen King, featuring many similarities but also some key differences. What happens in the ending is very different from both the 1989 movie and the book they're based on, but it's an incredibly bleak series of events. Still, the alternate ending is arguably even more unsettling.

In the movie, Louis Creed (Jason Clarke) and brings along wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz), daughter Ellie (Jeté Laurence), and son Gage (twins Hugo and Lucas Lavoie) and pet cat Church to their new family home in Ludlow, Maine. Louis soon befriends kooky neighbor Jud Crandall (John Lithgow), who develops a bond with the family. When Church is hit by a car, Jud and Louis bury the cat in a mysterious burial ground known to bring those buried there back from the dead. The cat returns, but is no longer the sweet feline friend he used to be. Things only get worse from there when Ellie is killed by a semi truck soon after, as a heartbroken Louis decides to bring back his baby girl with horrifying results.

In the theatrical cut of Pet Sematary, Louis successfully resurrects Ellie, who is now a much more sinister version of her former self. The little girl murders Jud before then stabbing her own mother, leaving her to bleed out. Ellie also knocks Louis unconscious, burying her mother in the burial ground in the meantime. When Louis comes to, he then realizes how disastrous things have become, and attempts to kill the undead Ellie. However, a resurrected Rachel impales him with a weather vane, killing him and burying him as well. The movie then closes with Louis, Rachel, and Ellie all descending upon the car where poor young Gage has been waiting, likely soon to meet the same fate of his family.

The Pet Sematary alternate ending from the home video release will present things a bit differently. As in the theatrical cut, Ellie stabs her mother and drags her to the graveyard, leading to a scuffle between the girl and Louis. The scene then cuts to Rachel waking up with Louis comforting her, telling her everything is going to be okay. When the camera slowly pans out, we can see Rachel is lying in a burial plot as she continues to bleed out. Clearly, Louis is going to bring her back following her death, despite her weak pleas for him not to go through with it. "We'll all be a family again," Louis says as Ellie then approaches with a shovel. What happens after this can be seen when the home video version is released.

Pet Sematary will officially release on Digital on June 25, followed by the DVD and Blu-ray release on July 9. The alternate ending will be one of many deleted scenes to be found in the special features, so anyone looking for more content from the horror movie will certainly want to check it out.
