Peter Weir is heading to World War II for his next drama. According to Variety, Weir will direct The Way Back. Weir will direct from his own script, based on sevral sources, most notably Slavomir Rawicz's "The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom."
The book recounts the true story of Rawicz's capture by the Russians in 1939 and his escape, with other inmates, in 1940 and the voyage to freedom that took them through the Siberian tundra, the Gobi desert, the Himalayan Mountains and finally to Tibet and Inida.
Weir, who is famous for his highly selective methods, last directed 2003's Master and Commander: The Far Side Of The World. He was set to direct Johnny Depp in Shantaram before dropping out.
The film will go before cameras this coming March in Bulgaria.
