No details were given regarding the characters they are playing at this time. Johnny Depp returns as Captain Jack Sparrow in this new adventure, where squares off with the villainous Captain Brand, a ghost who seeks vengeance for the death of his brother, which he holds Sparrow responsible for. Brenton Thwaites is also starring as a young British soldier who joins forces with Jack, with Kaya Scodelario portraying the female lead and love interest of Brenton Thwaites. Orlando Bloom has hinted several times in recent interviews that he may come back. At the end of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Orlando Bloom's Will Turner essentially became "Davy Jones," and Brenton Thwaites revealed in an interview that his character is the son of Davy Jones, who is searching for his father.

Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning are directing from a script by Jeff Nathanson, with Jerry Bruckheimer producing. Adam Brown most recently played Ori in The Hobbit trilogy, while Danny Kirrane starred in the sci-fi thriller Autómata.
