The Maze Runner star Kaya Scodelario is in early talks to take on the female lead in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The news comes just one month after she was named as one of five finalists for the role, alongside Gabriella Wilde (Endless Love), Lucy Boynton (Miss Potter), Jenna Thiam (The Returned) and Alexandra Dowling (The Musketeers). The female lead role is said to be the main love interest for Brenton Thwaites' character, a British soldier who teams up with Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp).

Javier Bardem is also on board as the villainous Captain Brand, a ghost who seeks revenge against Jack for the death of his brother. Original Pirates of the Caribbean star Orlando Bloom also hinted last month that he may be back as Will Turner, and that Disney may be eyeing the project as a potential reboot of the entire franchise. Neither Orlando Bloom's involvement or the reboot premise have been confirmed by Disney at this time.

Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning (Kon-Tiki) are directing from a script by Jeff Nathanson (Men in Black 3, Tower Heist), with Jerry Bruckheimer producing. Shooting is scheduled to begin this February in Australia, with Disney already setting a July 7, 2017 release date. Kaya Scodelario will reprise her role from The Maze Runner in The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, arriving in theaters this September.
