I don't think too many people expected this - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is breaking record after record. The Disney film easily destroyed every weekday record of box office sales in its first week, and day after day, the numbers just kept going up and up.

Everyone knew Pirates was going to be the number one movie this weekend, but the one record it didn't break, it came awfully close. The weekend total for Pirates was $62.1 million, just coming short of the record for the second weekend at the box office set by Shrek 2 in 2004 with $72 million, notes Box Office Mojo. $62 million is still crazy impressive; that bumps the total amount up to $258.2 million - adding to its numerous record totals.

The fight for second place was the real battle - who would finish behind Johnny, Orlando, and Keira? It looks like Shawn and Marlon Wayans with their comedy, Little Man. The family pair just snuck by You, Me and Dupree to take second place with $21.7 million for the weekend. In the Sony film, Shawn plays a vertically challenged jewel thief who pretends to be a baby to get back his loot - Marlon plays the family he gets attached to.

Coming in third was You, Me and Dupree with $21.3 million. The film follows Owen Wilson (Dupree) as he mooches off pal Matt Dillon and his newlywed wife, Kate Hudson. Hilarity ensues as the trio get into gag after gag. After the total numbers come out, of course, everything could change - with such a close estimate between the two newcomers, we could see Dupree in second and Little Man in third.

Superman Returns came in fourth place this weekend and is still flying at the box office taking in $11.6 million. That brings the total for the Warner Bros. movie up to $163.6 million for three weeks, still way under the $260 million production budget. High hopes were made for this film; the chance for a sequel may get a lot less with the amount of response from this first film.

Apparently, the devil has great fashion sense - Fox's The Devil Wears Prada is hanging tough at the box office with a $10.4 million fifth place finish this weekend. This takes it up to a three week total of $83.5 million, an amazing total for the studio and great for the careers of stars Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Emily Blunt.

Cars finished in sixth place over the weekend with $7.5 million to bring the total for the Disney/Pixar animated flick to $219.6 million over six weeks. It's been a pretty good summer for Mickey and company - and look for that luck to continue with their upcoming film, Invincible with Mark Wahlberg and Greg Kinnear, the story of the 1980's Philadelphia Eagles and coach Dick Vermeil.

Adam Sandler's comedy Click came in seventh place taking in $7 million over the weekend. That brings the four week total up to $119 million in the Sony flick, also starring Kate Beckensale and Christopher Walken.

People like Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock and it shows because their romantic drama, The Lake House is still hanging in eighth place with $1.5 million over the weekend. The five week total for the Warner Bros. film is $49 million.

Putting a head lock on ninth place is Jack Black in Nacho Libre. The Paramount comedy brought in $1.5 million to take its five week total up to $77.1 million. The film is directed by Jared Hess, who also directed Napoleon Dynamite.

Keanu Reeves is also starring in another Warner film, actually Warner Independent - A Scanner Darkly. That film rounds out the top ten with $1.1 million over the weekend. After opening wide this week, the three week total goes up a little to $1.7 million. The rotoscoping animated film is directed by Richard Linklater and also stars Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr., and Woody Harrelson.

Next week is the real test for Pirates as it takes on four new movies at the box office. The film that could give it a run is Columbia's Monster House - the film uses the same animation in The Polar Express, but does it so much better! The executive producers of the family film are Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis.

Also coming out this week is M. Night Shyamalan's Lady in the Water, based on a bedtime story from the haunting writer/director. Uma Thurman is My Super Ex-Girlfriend to Luke Wilson in the Fox action comedy; hottie, Anna Faris also stars in the film. And finally, Jay and Silent Bob and Dante and Randall are back in Clerks II - the follow-up to the 1994 Kevin Smith film brings back all your favorite characters, and adds Rosario Dawson.
