After fans had to endure all of 2014 without a new Pixar movie, they'll get two this year, with Inside Out on June 19 and The Good Dinosaur on November 25. Of course, this means that two new short films will also be released, with Lava attached to Inside Out, and today it was announced that Sanjay's Super Team will debut alongside The Good Dinosaur. We also have the first piece of concept art from the short, which will have its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France this June. Here's a brief description of the short film below.
"The seven-minute short begins with young Sanjay watching cartoons and eating cereal in a bland, beige room as his father jingles a bell, beckoning him to join in meditation. Reluctant and bored by the ceremony, Sanjay begins daydreaming a kind of ancient, Hindu version of "The Avengers," with the gods appearing like superheroes. As the daydream progresses, the color, light and animation of the film grows increasingly dazzling and cosmic, and Sanjay grows closer to understanding his father's inner world."
Sanjay Patel directed the short film, which is based on his experiences growing up in San Bernadino, California in the 1980s. While he would spend his Saturday's watching cartoons like most children, he also had to perform a daily Hindu ritual known as a puja. His parents bought the Lido Motel off Route 66 when he was just a child, which is where his short film is set. Here's what he had to say about his experiences growing up in the 1980s as an Indian boy.
"If I could, I would go back to the 1980s and give my younger self this short. I want to normalize and bring a young brown boy's story to the pop culture zeitgeist. To have a broad audience like Pixar's see this ... it is a big deal. I'm so excited about that."
Sanjay Patel joined Pixar in 1996 as an animator on A Bug's Life. He has also worked on Monsters Inc., Ratatouille and Monsters University before making his directing debut with Sanjay's Super Team. Take a look at the concept art below, and stay tuned for the first footage from Sanjay's Super Team.
