Tom Cruise's latest film Mena has been in production since late May in Colombia, with Universal Pictures setting a January 6, 2017 release date. Deadline reports that tragedy struck the set last night, as a small plane crashed near the Medellin, Colombia set, claiming the lives of two crew members. A third passenger who was aboard the twin-engine Aerostar plane survived the crash, but none of the victims have been identified.

Sources confirmed to Deadline that star Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman were not on the plane, since they had both just wrapped a scene when the crash took place. The director is said to be very shaken up over the deaths. The plane was heading to Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport in Medellin when the crash occurred. Here's what a spokesperson for Universal Pictures had to say about the crash.

An aircraft carrying crew members crashed while returning to Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport in Medellin following production wrap on the film Mena resulting in two fatalities. Further details are not available at this time. On behalf of the production, our hearts and prayers go out to the crew members and their families at this difficult time."

Mena is based on the outrageous (and real) exploits of Barry Seal Tom Cruise, a hustler and pilot unexpectedly recruited by the CIA to run one of the biggest covert operations in U.S. history. The supporting cast of Mena includes Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright, Jesse Plemons, Caleb Landry Jones, Jayma Mays, Benito Martinez, E. Roger Mitchell, Lola Kirke and Alejandro Edda. Doug Liman, who previously directed Tom Cruise in Universal's Edge of Tomorrow, directs from a script by Gary Spinelli (Stash House).

Cross Creek's Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson produce alongside Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer and Kim Roth, and Quadrant Pictures' Doug Davidson. While the film began production in Georgia, the filming shifted in Colombia in late August. We'll keep you posted with more details about this tragic plane crash when more details are released.
