Screenwriter Jeremy Garelick (The Break-Up) has been hired to rewrite the Police Academy remake for New Line Cinema. David Diamond and David Weissman (When in Rome) wrote the most recent draft of the script.

We reported back in January that Scott Zabielski will make his feature directorial debut on the reboot. He previously directed and produced several episodes of the Comedy Central series Tosh.0. The filmmaker also has some practical experience to lean on, since he went through the real police academy in Los Angeles and serves as a reserve officer in West Hollywood.

No story details have been given, although the plot will presumably revolve around a group of new police academy trainees. The franchise launched in 1984 with Police Academy, starring Steve Guttenberg, Kim Cattrall, and Bubba Smith. The comedy spawned six sequels, the most recent of which was 1994's Police Academy: Mission to Moscow.
