Details of Disney’s Predator prequel, Prey, have been slowly coming through over the last several months, and now director Dan Trachtenberg has revealed where he took some of his inspiration from; the video game series God of War. Taking to social media, the filmmaker celebrated the newfound appreciation for God of War, concluding that “it’s had some influence on PREY.”

Created by David Jaffe at Sony's Santa Monica Studio, God of War is an action-adventure video game franchise that began in 2005. The story follows the titular protagonist, Kratos, a Spartan warrior who later becomes the God of War after he is tricked into killing his family by his former master, the original Greek god of war Ares. Seeking vengeance, Kratos wages war on the gods, setting off a series of events that leads to wars with the mythological pantheons.

More recently, and likely the game that has had the most influence on Dan Trachtenberg’s approach to Prey, introduces an aged version of Kratos, with the story bringing in elements from Norse mythology and adding Kratos’ young son, Atreus to proceedings. Since its release, God of War has received universal acclaim, with critics praising the story, the evolution and characterization of Kratos, and the stunning visuals on display. No doubt Trachtenberg is hoping for a similar response to his installment in the Predator franchise.

Prey will be the fifth movie in the Predator franchise and is set to drop the alien warrior in the past, taking the series back in time and exploring the iconic movie monster’s first visit to Earth. "An all-new entry in the Predator franchise, Prey is set in the world of the Comanche Nation 300 years ago," a brief description for the movie reads.

The movie, which was previously called Skull, will also take the franchise back to its roots, with producer John Davis comparing Prey to gritty Oscar winner The Revenant. "[Skull] has more akin to The Revenant than it does any film in the Predator canon," Davis revealed. "You'll know what I mean once you see it." The Revenant was praised for a brutal depiction of its merciless natural surroundings, with certain elements of the cinematography and themes bearing more than a passing resemblance to God of War. So, it all adds up.

Prey will also introduce a female lead in the form of Legion star Amber Midthunder, who will star as a Comanche woman who goes against gender norms and traditions to become a warrior, setting her on a collision course with the mandibled skull-collector. "I'm beyond words feeling proud, humbled, and excited to finally be able to share this news and have been given this opportunity," Amber Midthunder wrote on social media. "It is time we see ourselves represented fully in mainstream entertainment. As strong and human, by our own people. I can't wait for you all to see what we made this summer. É„ra ako & pilamaye."

Prey is scheduled to be released exclusively to the streaming service Hulu in summer 2022.
