Great news Predator fans, the upcoming prequel, Prey, has now been officially given an R rating by the MPA. Prey has achieved the hoped-for “Restricted” rating thanks to its "strong bloody violence,” meaning that the iconic alien hunter will once again bring its merciless tactics and spine-ripping antics to Hulu this August.

The R rating puts Prey alongside the likes of the first Predator, Predator 2, Predators, and The Predator, and distances the prequel from the much-maligned Alien versus Predator franchise. Now that the Predator franchise is under the Disney umbrella, many had worried that the bloody violence inherent in the Predator franchise would be watered down in Prey. But it seems that this is far from the case.

Prey director Dan Trachtenberg recently assured fans of the mandibled warrior that being in the House of Mouse would not affect the violent action in the prequel. "The Disney thing did not affect the movie at all in terms of its content," Trachtenberg revealed recently. "That's why I'm excited for this trailer to come out.”

He continued, praising Disney for allowing him to make the Predator prequel he wanted to, and that fans want to see.

“And for people who were worried that was this gonna be PG-13, or was it gonna be 'Disney-Made-Predator.' It was a 20th Century movie throughout the entire experience. And then Disney has been awesome in receiving the reins of it and now delivering it out into the world, but there was never any mandate from them. I was terrified of some of the wording we had in the script and when they read it, I was like, 'Oh no, are they gonna freak out over the descriptions of gore and stuff?' But, no. It is a brutal, intense, very R-rated movie. And I'm excited for that to be dispelled, that Disney's gonna do 'Disney Things.'"

Prey is an all-new action-thriller from 20th Century Studios and the next outing in the long-running Predator franchise. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (The Boys, 10 Cloverfield Lane), Prey is set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, and tells the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.

Written by Patrick Aison (Jack Ryan, Treadstone), Prey stars Amber Midthunder (Legion) as Naru, the young Comanche warrior who must fight to protect her tribe against a Predator. Starring alongside Midthunder are Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, Julian Black Antelope, and Dane DiLiegro as the Predator.

Prey is scheduled to be released by 20th Century Studios as a Hulu original film on August 5, 2022.
