Director Dan Trachtenberg has teased more outings for the Predator following the release of his upcoming prequel, Prey. The iconic movie monster will set out on the hunt once again in Prey, which finds the Predator stalking a Comanche warrior in 1719. Taking the alien trophy hunter into the past marks a major change for the franchise and, speaking with Time Out, Trachtenberg has teased more bold swings for the Predator moving forward.

“There are a lot of exciting ideas for what could be next for the franchise. The things that most excite me are the boldest swings and I think there's scope to do other things that haven't been done before.”

Dan Trachtenberg, who is best known for The Boys and 10 Cloverfield Lane, is aiming to reignite the Predator series with Prey, which will go back to what made the first movie work so well while introducing audiences to an earlier version of the extraterrestrial. Alongside an earlier version of human civilization. Putting the Predator in the past and introducing a worthy adversary with her own story in the form of Amber Midthunder’s Comanche warrior woman is sure to bring the franchise back from what has been a constant onslaught of criticism and critical lambasting.

But what other bold swings does Trachtenberg have in mind following the release of Prey? Perhaps sticking with Midthunder’s character beyond one movie? Or maybe dropping the Predator into different time periods? Whatever he has planned, it’s certainly promising to hear that both he and Disney will continue to try and bring something different to the franchise following the release of Prey.

Prey is an all-new action-thriller from 20th Century Studios and the next outing in the long-running Predator franchise. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, Prey is set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, and tells the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.

Written by Patrick Aison (Jack Ryan, Treadstone), Prey stars Amber Midthunder (Legion) as Naru, the young Comanche warrior who must fight to protect her tribe against a Predator. Starring alongside Midthunder are Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, Julian Black Antelope, and Dane DiLiegro as the Predator.

To the delight of fans, it has now been confirmed that Prey will be rated R thanks to its "strong bloody violence.” While many had concerns now that Predator falls under the Disney umbrella, Trachtenberg has since assured that "The Disney thing did not affect the movie at all in terms of its content." Which should bode well for the future of the franchise.

Prey is scheduled to be released by 20th Century Studios as a Hulu original film on August 5, 2022.
