Fallout, the incredible post-apocalyptic video game by Bethesda, is getting a TV series from Prime Video. The show has some good star power behind it and officially started filming last summer. Right now, the plot is locked in a vault somewhere, being kept safe from an explosion of popularity, but we know it will be an original story. Fans are getting sneak peeks from stars’ Instagram accounts and YouTube videos. The excitement is real. And many fans find they have to protect other people from the joy that is radiating off them.

Fallout takes place in a strange alternate future in which a nuclear war destroyed the world after World War II. All technology is built on that of the atomic age, and culture was frozen in the 1950s. Fallout creates a remarkably apt aesthetic that contrasts the idealistic American lifestyle with the bombed-out nuclear wasteland that thinking created. The Fallout TV show will surely bring us all the sarcastic robots, anarchist settlements, and bombed-out monuments that the nuclear apocalypse brings. But aside from a world-ending good time, there are some specific things that the Prime Video series is promising. Here’s everything we know about the Fallout TV show.

Update October 30, 2023: This article has been updated following the newly announced premiere date for the series as well as new cast members that have joined Fallout.

As of now, we don’t know much about the plot. It’s being kept secret in the files on some overseer’s computer. What we do know is that this TV series isn’t going to draw specifically from one Fallout game or another. It’s going to have an original story. There are some things that we know every fan will want to see. And there are some even juicy secrets we can imply from character names and filming locations that have been leaked. Let’s start with some of the basics.

Fallout will likely have plenty of callbacks to the games, from Nuke-Cola bottles to the Pip-Boy. Old-fashioned music on the radio is a big part of the game and likely will play a part in the series. It is known that the series will take place in the world of the game, so it will be set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland inspired by the 1950s aesthetic. Collider ended up getting some exclusive set photos of a Super Duper Mart. Fans will recognize the name as one of Fallout’s most iconic dungeons that appears across games in the series.

Bethesda's video game series is getting adapted to the small screen via Amazon. Here are a few essential elements to get right.

Certain cast members have been listed as particular characters, and that might allow us to guess at the plot. For instance, one of the characters has been cast as a character named Maximus, a name that sounds eerily Roman. Fans of Fallout: New Vegas will recall the faction of slavers that modeled themselves after the old Roman Empire. The character of Sheriff Rex implies a faction of law and order, possibly the iconic Brotherhood of Steel. Though no character names seem reminiscent of these power armor-toting militants, they will surely pop up somewhere.

Fallout certainly has a lot of star power behind it. Walton Goggins (Justified, The Hateful Eight) is starring in the series. Although his character remains unlisted, most people believe the actor will be playing a ghoul due to a photo on his Instagram that showed him in front of a sign on a trailer that just read “ghoul.” Kyle MacLachlan (Dune, Twin Peaks) has also been cast in an undisclosed role, as has Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets, Arcane) and Xelia Mendes-Jones (Sans Comic).

There are some characters that have been confirmed. Aaron Moten (Disjointed) will play Maximus. Moises Arias (The King of Staten Island) is cast as a character named Norm, and Christopher Parker (famous stuntman and performer from John Wick and FBI: Most Wanted) as Sherriff Rex. One of the most underrated actors, Dale Dickey (Breaking Bad, True Blood), will play the role of Ma Norm. Johnny Pemberton (In the Loop, 21 Jump Street) will play the character of Thaddeus. Actors Dave Register, Annabel O'Hagan, Leer Leary, and Rodrigo Luzzi will also appear in the series in various roles.

Conventional wisdom used to be that video games could not be made into decent adaptations, but all that has changed.

In October 2023, more actors were announced to have joined the cast. Michael Emerson, best known for his work on Evil and Arrow, has joined the cast in an undisclosed role. Zach Cherry, who appears in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings, and the hit series Severance, has joined the cast. Just Like That... star Sarita Choudhury and Deadpool's Blind Al star Leslie Uggams will appear in the series as well.

Fallout has some serious talent bringing it to life. The series was developed by husband and wife duo, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. The two famously worked together to bring Westworld to life. That show was also a sci-fi epic that merged the Western aesthetic, so Fallout is in good hands on that front. Jonathan Nolan is the brother of director Christopher Nolan, and the duo have collaborated on many projects, including Memento (which was adapted from Jonathan Nolan's short story "Memento Mori"), The Prestige, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, and Interstellar.

The series showrunners are Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner. Robertson-Dwoert previous credits include 2018's Tomb Raider and 2019's Captain Marvel. Wagner has more of a comedy background, having worked on series like The Office, Portlandia, and Silicon Valley. This is certainly a wide array of talent that covers a wide array of genres which will hopefully bring this world to life.

Todd Howard, who produced and directed both Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 video games, is also an Executive Producer on the series, meaning that the creators of the game will have a very hands-on experience crafting the franchise for adaptation.

Fallout: Release Date

After fans waited for so long, Bethesda announced that Fallout will premiere on April 12, 2024. With the arrival so soon, it is only a matter of time before footage and trailers for the series start being released. With so much of the upcoming television and film slate being delayed and moved due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA Strike, this might make Fallout one of the big event television series of 2024 as the marketplace suffers a drought of material.

Fallout will stream on Prime Video. It is unknown if they will drop the entire series all at once or if they will premiere the first three episodes followed by weekly releases. It is also unknown how many episodes the first season will be but based on prior Prime Video series like The Boys, Gen V., and Good Omens, it seems like eight episodes is a safe assumption.
