Focus Features has released the first trailer for Promising Young Woman. This serves as the feature directorial debut of Emerald Fennell, best known as the showrunner of the acclaimed series Killing Eve. Fennell has partnered with Oscar-nominee Carey Mulligan in what looks to be a unique, timely and violent modern revenge tale.

The trailer starts out with Carey Mulligan, seemingly too drunk to keep herself composed at a bar. A guy, under the guise of being nice, takes her home and proceeds to take advantage of the situation. To his surprise, the woman he thought was a drunken mess was just putting on a show and decides to teach him a presumably ugly lesson about his seedy actions. We then come to learn that this is a weekly activity for her, as we see several of the men she pulls the trick on, many of which claim to be "nice guys." There's a bit of a mystery at the center of the tale, something from this woman's past that haunts her. It's not revealed what it is, but it's crystal clear it had to do with a man who did her wrong. The whole thing is set to an orchestral version of Toxic by Britney Spears, which only adds to the atmosphere.

The movie is described as a "delicious new take on revenge." Emerald Fennell, in addition to directing, also penned the screenplay. The cast includes Adam Brody (Shazam), Bo Burnham (The Big Sick), Alison Brie (Community), Connie Britton (American Horror Story), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad), Alfred Molina (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black), Max Greenfield (New Girl), Jennifer Coolidge (American Pie), and Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption)

Promising Young Woman centers on Cassie (Carey Mulligan), who everyone said was a promising young woman. However, that all came undone thanks to a mysterious event abruptly derailed her future. Nothing in Cassie's life is what it seems to be on the surface. She's wickedly smart, tantalizingly cunning, and she's living a secret double life by night, which sees her turning the tables on men who prey on drunk women at clubs. Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give her a chance to right the wrongs of the past.

Amongst the producers on the project is Oscar-nominee Margot Robbie, which only serves to add to the intrigue. The actress has been taking more of an active role behind the scenes as a producer lately, and this is one of the projects she decided to get behind. Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, Ben Browning and Ashley Fox also serve as producers. What's more, the movie was recently revealed as one of the selections for the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, where it will hold its premiere. Promising Young Woman is set to arrive in theaters on April 17, 2020, from Focus Features. Be sure to check out the new trailer for yourself.
