Back in October, Universal Pictures announced that The Purge 3 is happening, with the studio setting a July 1, 2016 release date for the horror sequel just a few months later. Today, Variety reports that The Purge: Anarchy star Frank Grillo is in final negotiations to reprise his role as Sergeant in The Purge 3. It isn't clear if other stars from The Purge: Anarchy will be back as well.

No story details for The Purge 3 have been given yet, but back in January, producer Jason Blum shot down a rumor that this sequel will be a prequel, set during the very first Purge and delving into this chaotic day's origins. 2013's The Purge and last year's sequel The Purge: Anarchy center on one day out of the year where, for 12 straight hours, all crime is legal, including murder. In The Purge: Anarchy, Frank Grillo portrayed a character only known as Sergeant, who goes on a revenge mission during the Purge, although he gets sidetracked when he comes across a group of people who need protection.

James DeMonaco, who wrote and directed both The Purge and last year's sequel The Purge: Anarchy, is back to write and direct The Purge 3. Jason Blum is producing through his Blumhouse Pictures company, along with Sebastian Lemercier and Platinum Dunes' Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Bradley Fuller. The Purge 3 grossed $89 million worldwide in 2013 from just a $3 million, while The Purge: Anarchy earned $110.6 million worldwide from a $9 million budget.

Frank Grillo was almost unable to reprise his Sergeant role in The Purge 3 due to scheduling conflicts with his DirecTV TV series Kingdom, which returns for its second season this fall. The conflicts were ironed out, and now production on The Purge 3 is set to begin this September. With shooting scheduled to begin in just a few short weeks, we should be hearing about more cast members signing on in the very near future.

Frank Grillo recently wrapped production on Captain America: Civil War, reprising his role as Brock Rumlow, a.k.a. Crossbones from the Marvel superhero movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The actor will next be seen in Stephanie, Extortion and Beyond Skyline. Are you glad that Frank Grillo is coming back for The Purge 3?
