Great news has just come in for fans looking forward to the Puss in Boots sequel. Deadline reports that Salma Hayek (Eternals, House of Gucci) is officially signed on for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish to reprise her role as Kitty Softpaws, the fierce feline she lent her voice to in the original 2011 film. This teams her back up with returning star Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory, Indiana Jones 5), who's back once again as the titular cat. A new photo providing our first look at the sequel showcases the two where they'll be joined by a dog character to turn the group into a new version of the three amigos.

This new dog character is named Perro and is voiced by Harvey Guillén (What We Do In the Shadows). New cast members also include Florence Pugh (Black Widow, Hawkeye), Olivia Colman (The Favourite, The Lost Daughter), Wagner Moura (Narcos), Ray Winstone (Black Widow), John Mulaney (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Lost City), Anthony Mendez (Jane the Virgin), and Samson Kayo (Our Flag Means Death).

Joel Crawford directs Puss in Boots: The Last Wish with Januel Mercado co-directing. Mark Swift is producing. It is executive produced by Illumination's Chris Meledandri.

The sequel picks up with "the daring outlaw Puss in Boots as he discovers that his passion for peril and disregard for safety have taken their toll." It follows the events of the 2011 film, Puss in Boots, which was a spinoff to the Shrek series. That first film, directed by Chris Miller and written by Tom Wheeler, serves as a prequel that follows the titular feline prior to the events of his arrival in Shrek 2. Puss in Boots was a tremendous success with $555 pulled in at the box office.

While the first Puss in Boots movie turns ten years old this year, fans were able to check back in with the character during that time. They were treated to a series adaptation on Netflix in 2015 dubbed The Adventures of Puss in Boots. The series also served as a prequel to Shrek 2 and was a hit for the streamer, lasting six seasons with nearly 80 episodes before ending its run in 2018. The caveat was that Antonio Banderas didn't voice the role in the series with Eric Bauza filling in. Its talented voice cast also included names like Carlos Alazraqui, Grey Griffin, Jayma Mays, Danny Trejo, Alan Tudyk, and John Leguizamo.

There's a lot more to look forward to in the very near future, as the first full trailer for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will arrive on March 14. This follows a previously released teaser from earlier this month which revealed the news of the incoming trailer. The movie will be released on Sept. 23, 2022.
