Though Shrek Forever After was touted as the final film in that animated franchise, DreamWorks Animation has teased that a Shrek 5 may be in the works. Though, that has never been confirmed. But rest assured, we probably haven't seen the last of the big green ogre and his pals. Talking with Empire, Puss in Boots himself, Antonio Banderas, hinted that Shrek may actually show up in the impending sequel Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives and 40 Thieves, though it will probably be just for a cameo. The actor says:

"I heard some rumors that Shrek may be coming back. That would be great. Shrek doing a cameo... in MY movie? Uh, huh! Yeah, I'd like that."

That sequel is still a good three years away, as Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives and 40 Thieves won't hit theaters until at least December 2018. That was the film's original release date, but for now, DWA has taken it off the table and placed it back into development. The 2011 adventure Puss in Boots was actually a spinoff of Shrek 2, where the character first appeared. Chris Miller, who directed the first Puss in Boots, was set to come back for the sequel before DWA decided to make changes to it's slate. About that, Antonio Banderas reveals:

"They are restructuring the script now. We started... but that's the process. A lot of people participate in the creation of the script and the story and the narrative, everything. And they include you! They take you to California and you read the script with them, give them your ideas, and a couple of months later you see a new script where everything has been touched up."

Guillermo del Toro is expected to return as an executive producer, though it isn't known if Mike Myers will return to voice Shrek should he actually show up for a cameo. What do you think? Do you want to see Shrek return for another adventure with Puss? Or should Boots swing this latest sequel on his own?
