Iconic filmmaker Quentin Tarantino is not the biggest fan of Marvel movies, something that's been apparent given some recent remarks he's had to say about them, but that doesn't mean he doesn't get why younger audiences enjoy them. For Tarantino, he simply feels that the superhero movie trend came along too late for him to enjoy it, as he grew out of comic books many years ago. In an interview with Howard Stern for The Howard Stern Show, Tarantino opened up on how he feels about superhero movies and why he doesn't want to get involved with making one.
As the Pulp Fiction helmer explains, he feels that it's a matter of getting too old for the source material, though he doesn't imagine Scorsese was ever a fan in the first place. With Tarantino, he had grown up appreciating Marvel comic books, but he just doesn't find himself caring about superheroes at this stage of his life. From the Stern interview, here's what Tarantino said when asked about Scorsese's controversial comments on not considering Marvel movies to be "cinema."
"He's an old man. You think Scorsese's gonna be into Ant-Man vs. the Wasp? He's not gonna be! I don't think he would've been that into that at 37, forget about however f*cking old he is now. That's just not his thing. Even me, I used to collect Marvel comic books. I loved Marvel comic books. You know, if all this sh*t was coming out in '86, I would be all down with it. They waited until I got too old for me to be so into it."
Are Marvel Movies Cinema?
To stress his point, Tarantino shared a story about meeting a teenager who spoke to him about movies. It was through this conversation that Tarantino realized that today's younger audiences see those films as "cinema" because they've grown up with it. He also suggests that they just haven't really seen better movies to compare them to, only other big name franchises of today that are far unlike classic Scorsese films.
"He's talking about how he saw the first Iron Man when he was four or five, so, to him, Marvel movies and DC movies are movies. And there's been actually almost no competition to show him that there can be anything else. So, for him, going to the movies means going to see those movies. And if it's not that, it's the Star Wars movies, and if it's not that, it's the Harry Potter movies, and if it's not that, it's the Transformer movies."
