The director of one childrens classic cartoon remake is stepping on board another classic remake. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Raja Gosnell (Scooby Doo) has signed on to direct the new Smurfs film.

The film will be a live-action/CGI hybrid film, which Gosnell has experience with in both the Scooby Doo film and his most recent movie, Beverly Hills Chihuahua. The script was written by the Shrek 2 writing team of J. David Stern and David N. Weiss along with Audrey Wells.

Plot details were kept under wraps, but the film was expected to include characters like Papa Smurf and the villain Gargamel. The film is already slated for release in 2D and 3D on December 17, 2010.
