It sounds like Dwayne Johnson is going to jump straight from the set of his Jumanji 2 sequel into the video game adaptation Rampage. Warner Bros. as set a new release date for this monster movie. They have also given their A Star is Born remake a new release date as well.
The often heard about Rampage movie has securely locked in the release date of April 20, 2018. What this means is that the summer 2018 movie going season is going to kick off exceptionally early. The thriller brings the classic Midway arcade game to the big screen with The Rock fighting off giant lizard, gorilla and wolf-like creatures intent on demolishing a major metropolis. No synopsis has been revealed yet, but hopefully it won't bring giant monster fatigue as we're set to also get Kong: Skull Island the year before, and Godzilla 2 the year after, with Kong Vs. Godzilla looming in the distance.
Rampage will reunite The Rock with his San Andreas team of writer Carlton Cuse, director Brad Peyton and producer Beau Flynn. This will be their third film together after working on the sequel Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which helped rejuvenate that franchise with a fresh take on the mythology. There have been rumors that the team are also planning a third Journey movie.
Rampage arrived in the arcade way back in 1986. Players could control one of three big bad monsters. There was the giant ape named George, a big lizard who went by the name Lizzy and a scary werewolf named Ralph who loomed over every other lycanthrope in the land. This trio ran amok across the United States, pounding down buildings and skyscrapers while battling incoming military vehicles such as tanks and airplanes. Over the years, there have been plenty of video game sequels for Rampage which added even more creatures and even took the main trio into space and back through time.
Along with the exciting news that Rampage actually has a firm release date, Warner Bros. has announced that A Star is Born will finally return to theaters September 28, 2018. The musical will mark the directorial debut of Bradley Cooper and stars pop sensation Lady Gaga in her first feature role. The remake has been a longtime coming, with Cooper's American Sniper director Clint Eastwood once attached.
This will be a modern retelling of the original 1937 drama starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. It was later remade in 1954 by George Cukor, starring Judy Garland and James Mason and again in 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. Lady Gaga is composing all-new songs for the drama. Right now, A Star is Born has its September release date to itself.
As for Rampage, Dwayne Johnson and his monsters will have some competition. But what it is remains a mystery. The video game adaptation will be going up against an untitled R-Rated comedy from Universal Pictures. And New Line is set to release an Untitled Tentpole on this date. And there are no firm guesses as to what that could possibly be.
