The Razzie Awards have always walked the line between parody and cruelty, depending on whose opinion you side with. This year, the Razzies decided to include a category solely for The Worst Performance by Bruce Willis in 2021 after the action star appeared in several DTV movies. In light of yesterday’s news, Willis’ Aphasia diagnosis has been the subject of some furious social media debates, including many calls for the Razzies to be scrapped entirely after awards founders John Wilson and Mo Murphy put out statements that didn’t endear them to Willis’ supporters.

From the iconic appearances of Halle Berry, who arrived to accept her award for Catwoman with her Oscars in tow, and Sandra Bullock, who won a Razzie the same year she collected an Academy Award for The Blind Side, to the alleged criticism of the ceremony by the likes of Sylvester Stallone, some are on board with the less than serious awards and those who aren’t. This year, Willis was singled out for his own special award after appearing in 8 direct-to-video movies that were all roundly panned by critics, and at the awards, it was Cosmic Sin that took the dubious honor of being his worst of the lot.

Following the announcement that Willis would be retiring from acting due to his condition, the Razzies official Twitter account posted a message saying, “The Razzies are truly sorry for #BruceWillis diagnosed condition. Perhaps this explains why he wanted to go out with a bang in 2021. Our best wishes to Bruce and family.” While that statement was not meant to cause a stir, there was a lot of people took issue with the comments, with some demanding the statement be removed and others calling for the entire Razzie Awards to be canceled.

Removing the award now would be like Chris Rock withdrawing his joke from the Oscars; it happened, and changing it after the event doesn’t effectively change anything. As reported by The Wrap, that is clearly the stance of Wilson and Murphy, who further commented on the calls for them to remove the post and apologize for putting the award up in the first place. That statement read:

“Whoever handles Willis' affairs should probably not have permitted him to do such a high volume of work in such a short time, especially if they were aware of his situation. In Willis' defense, his reps should have kept a better eye on his legacy. It should also be pointed out that the ‘Bruce Willis’ category was specific to 2021. We never intended it to be an on-going category.”

It is clear that Willis’s health issues have been coming for a little while, and it could be partly true that knowing how the condition was going to impact his life, Willis has just wanted to do as much of the thing he has loved doing for years before finally calling it quits. Willis currently has around eight more movies already filmed in the same vein to be released this year, and while these may not be the biggest and best movies of his career, no one can blame him for packing in as much as possible in what was clearly a shortening window of time. One thing that is certain is that his presence in Hollywood will be missed, and the Razzies won’t be putting him up for a similar award next yet.
