After Marvel's Black Panther was finally dethroned following five straight weeks atop the box office, it paved the way for a crop of new champs, starting with Pacific Rim Uprising last weekend, and Ready Player One this weekend. The reign of Pacific Rim Uprising was a short one, dropping a whopping 67.3% from first place to fifth place, while Ready Player One fared just as well as expected, taking in an estimated $41.2 million, falling in line with most projections. While this adaptation of Ernest Cline's novel had been projected by some to take in over $50 million this weekend, its debut was solid nonetheless.

Warner Bros. rolled out Ready Player One in a big way, with a huge theater count of 4,234, earning a solid per-screen average of $9,733. The movie opened a day earlier on Thursday, March 29, and when taking into account its opening day and Wednesday sneak previews, the movie has taken in $53.2 million, and it has been a big hit overseas as well. Ready Player One has raked in $128 million in foreign markets for a worldwide opening weekend total of $181.2 million. No budget numbers have been released thus far, but Ready Player One is well on its way to becoming a profitable hit for the studio.

Also opening this weekend is Tyler Perry's Acrimony, which debuted in second place with a solid $17.1 million, earning an $8,524 per-screen average from 2,006 theaters. The other box office newcomer, however, didn't fare quite as well, PureFlix's God's Not Dead: A Light in the Darkness, which debuted in 12th place with $2.6 million, earning a paltry $1,553 per-screen average from 1,693 theaters. There is no indication that God's Not Dead: A Light In the Darkness will expand into more theaters, especially after this dismal showing, so don't expect it to crack the top 10 throughout its run.

The top 10 is rounded out by Black Panther in third place with $11.2 million, followed by I Can Only Imagine in fourth with $10.7 million, after dropping just 21.7% in its third weekend, and Pacific Rim Uprising in fifth place with $9.2 million. The top 10 is rounded out by Sherlock Gnomes ($7 million), Love, Simon ($4.8 million), Tomb Raider ($4.7 million), A Wrinkle in Time ($4.6 million) and Paul, Apostle of Christ ($3.5 million). Also debuting in limited release is Baaghi 2, which earned $580,000 from 123 theaters for a $4,715 per-screen average, Finding Your Feet, which took in $61,295 from 14 theaters for a $4,378 per-screen average and Gemini, which earned $34,184 from four theaters for a $8,546 per-screen average.

Looking ahead to next weekend, Universal brings its R-rated comedy Blockers to the big screen, slated to debut in roughly 3,300 theaters, with Paramount's thriller A Quiet Place arriving in roughly 3,200 theaters, Mirror/LD's drama The Miracle Season arriving in 1,700 theaters and Entertainment Studios' Chappaquiddick debuting in 1,500 theaters.
