Real Steel is a sci-fi movie directed by Shawn Levy, set in a world where people build robots to compete in boxing matches. The film premiered in 2011, and it followed Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman), a former prizefighter-turned-promoter who teams with his estranged son, Max (Dakota Goyo), with whom he must form an unlikely bond in order to build and train a championship robot for a final chance at redemption. The Real Steel film explores themes of family, redemption, and fighting against all odds as its characters find themselves intertwined in high-stakes battles.

Shawn Levy recently revealed the rising prospects for a Real Steel series. According to Levy, the Disney+ spin-off series is in “very active and promising development”. This news comes from a recent interview with Collider, where he mentioned picking up where the Real Steel movie ended and doing some really exciting things with it. Real Steel was a box office success, earning almost three times its $110 million budget at the global box office, and now it looks like it's time for Atom's triumphant return.

Since Real Steel's last update, much has changed. After a long search for the right writer, Shawn Levy finally found his perfect match. When asked how development for the spin-off series was going, Shawn Levy revealed that the series "is in very active and promising development. I'm really excited about the ideas that we're exploring. But as you can tell from my cagey words, I can't yet tell you about the writer or timeline.”

When it came to finding a writer for Real Steel, director Shawn Levy was not in any rush to make his decision. Levy wanted to be sure that whoever he chose for the project was the ideal match for writing this film series. He scoured through many possibilities and ultimately landed on someone whose style captured the essence of Real Steel perfectly. Levy stated that:

“But I will say that we heard a lot of pitches. And I realized, over the course of those pitches, that I am fiercely protective of ‘Real Steel.’ I'd rather make no show than the wrong show. And I finally heard a take that takes the lore of the movie and does some really exciting things with it. I'm finally getting really excited about where we're headed.”

Unfortunately, there's no news on when the show will air. The Real Steel series is still in its early stages of development and with that being said, it'll likely be a couple of years until it sees the light of day.
